Getting your maternity session done can be a beautiful experience for both expecting mothers and fathers alike! And Palm Beach County has some amazing locations to capture the perfect mood and setting of your shoot. But, one of the biggest obstacles we see expecting parents run into while planning their maternity photo session is knowing how to choose the right wardrobe for the day.
So, here are some of the best tips we could think of to give to all the soon-to-be mom and dads out there, racking their brains with what to wear for their next maternity photo shoot!
What To Wear for Your Next Maternity Session
First off, bring MULTIPLE outfit changes. It’s important to have options for the day of the shoot, especially if you are planning on using more than one location. And bring outfits that you aren’t going to laugh at in 10 years. You’re best off choosing timeless pieces of clothing, and not anything that’s just a current fad.
We also generally suggest choosing solids over patterned fabrics and wearing colors that stand out! If you’re going to be shooting photos in lush fields of green, don’t wear green. The same goes if you’re planning to take your maternity session to the beach—might want to skip the blue articles of clothing or any patterns that resemble the ocean. Wear something that stands out against your background. Our rule of thumb? Pastels. It’s hard to go wrong with pastels.
What about the fit?
This one’s for the expecting mother out there: Get yourself a maxi dress, girl! They look stunning on soon-to-be moms and perfect for almost any weather, especially here in South Florida!
Typically, you’ll want to wear something that is tight around the belly—anything flattering that shows off that bump! Textured fabric works really well here, but whatever dress you go for, make sure it’s long and flowing. A short dress just won’t cut it. One of our favorite places to recommend is Rent The Runway, where they have an amazing selection of dresses for rent that you don’t have to buy! No need to buy a dress that you might only wear once, especially if you want multiple options.
What should I do for makeup?
Lastly, it’s good to have a look that is au naturel on the day of your shoot. That being said, it’s best to go light on the makeup. Show off that maternal glow! And if you really want to show off that natural look, you might even consider going bare-belly for a few shots and really rocking that baby bump!

We had an absolute blast with these expecting parents, and they looked AMAZING! They chose really great outfits to wear that stood out against their surroundings while still showing who they were as a couple.
