Often, when couples reach out to us at Organic Moments Photography to talk about engagement session tips. A big question on their minds is what they should wear to an engagement session. Well– with our experience photographing engagement sessions, we’ve learned a few things about the best outfits to wear when you’re being photographed. We wanted to share some of those suggestions with our family on the blog, so here are a few of our best tips on what to wear for your engagement photography session.
Engagement Session Tips
Before thinking about what to wear for your engagement session, let’s take a step back. There are a few things to figure out first. Here are a few engagement session tips for you to consider.
Where will your engagement session be?
First, it’s important to decide where your engagement session will be. That decision will establish the backdrop of your photos. Think about the colors that will be most prevalent in your backdrop. A lush, green landscape will give you different background colors than a beachside engagement session. Let the location be the first color in your color pallet.
Plan a color scheme
Think of the colors scheme the way you decorate a room. You need to pick colors that complement each other. If you were doing an engagement session in a park, you would not want to wear the same green as the grass. A rich purple or bright orange would really stand out against a green backdrop. For a beachside backdrop, bright colors pop out against the blues and greys of the sky. Think about all the colors pulling together as one color story. Check out the way one of our couples used white and black to stand out against a stormy sky!
When it comes to clothing, we love flowy dresses that catch the wind. They allow for movement and interest in your images, when walking in the water, standing in the waves, or dancing together. Hats and other accessories are a fun way to layer in additional colors and textures but keep it simple. The goal for your outfits is that they stand the test of time. You want these pictures to be hanging for years to come, right?
Remember that you and your partner should complement each other, too. If you’re wearing prints, make sure to vary the line and scale. We loved how one of our couples in these photos blended a white and blue floral on her dress with a small white and blue checked button down. Don’t wear the same color because it can make you blend into one another in the final images.
How many outfits should you bring?
Another thing that our couples ask is how many outfits should you bring to an engagement session. In order to make the most of your engagement session, we recommend two outfits; one dressy, one relaxed. The clothing you choose should be something that makes you feel good. Speaking of making you feel good, make sure you have shoes that match both of your outfits. That way, your look is complete from head to toe. Take a look at sites like Rent The Runway and ETSY for clothing ideas.
You want to feel confident and beautiful during your session! And, we want you to focus on each other, not worrying about your outfit. Wear properly fitted clothing so you both look your best.
Another of our best engagement session tips is getting a professional makeup application. If you’re thinking about partnering with a makeup artist for your wedding day, schedule your trial for the day of your engagement session! Professional makeup artists know how to apply makeup to help you look amazing in photographs. Getting a chance to ‘test drive’ your makeup and your makeup artist can help you feel more relaxed and confident on your wedding day.
