Pelican Grand Beach Resort Wedding | Fort Lauderdale
‘Stay calm and go with the flow’ was Sonia’s mantra throughout her wedding planning, and we totally appreciate her thought process. Weddings can be maddening, and being in control of your thoughts and emotions can help you enjoy the event instead of losing out on all the fun and romance. Sonia and Joe had met in New Smyrna Beach exactly six years before their wedding date and got married at the beautiful Pelican Grand Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale. It was such a sweet and lovely wedding at one of their favorite hotels, and I enjoyed converting their special day into photographs.
Sonia & Joe’s Sweet Story of Love
Sonia was born and raised in Orlando, and New Smyrna had always been like another home to her while Joe was born and raised just outside of Nashville. He also served there as the Officer-In-Charge later. Lindsey Berry, a friend, introduced Sonia and Joe to each other, and it’s been history since!
In six years between them, Sonia and Joe have lived in eight different places in three different states. They have celebrated promotions and accomplishments on both ends and even survived life-threatening situations. Sonia says they have grown together as well as individually during this time. They have overcome many challenges and come out stronger from them. Being in the military for 21 years and now as a Warrant Officer, Joe had always been independent.
For Sonia, she has thrived on being independent especially working in a male-dominated industry. Telling me about Joe and herself, Sonia said that they are complete opposites yet amazingly similar. She always traveled, backpacking Europe in college, going to South Africa for 6 weeks all alone, and then traveling to Vietnam for 2 weeks.
Whereas Joe wasn’t entirely on-board with her wanderlust ways, he has since grown to appreciate and embrace it. They have explored places like Singapore and Bali, where Joe proposed to Sonia at a water temple in the middle of the ocean as a tribute to her grandmother. They have so many more plans to visit places together in the future.

The Oceanview Ballroom at the Pelican Grand Beach Resort was great for photography, and the Oceanview Terrace, where Sonia and Joe organized their cocktail hour, was such a lovely place. The ceremony took place in the Atlantic Ballroom, where I got some fantastic shots. Guests traveled in from as far as Dubai, UK, and Scotland to as close as Miami and Orlando to attend Sonia and Joe’s wedding. It was a special moment for the couple when their family lit the sky with lanterns to end the wedding festivities in style. It was a spectacular sight that we managed to capture with our cameras.
